A Bonteheuwel taxi guard is causing a stir on social media after he began offering rides to pensioners over 70. Yaseen Abrahams has been lauded for his generous and selfless initiative.

Abrahams explained that along with his driver Ashraf Cassiem, they have offered free lifts to elderly people who were struggling for a long time.

Briefly.co.za learned that the taxi owner, David Roman, gave them the green light as long as they reached their targets according to iol.co.za.

Abrahams' mom died in 2016 after suffering several heart attacks and strokes at the age of 54.

“It broke my heart because I loved my mother. Working as a taxi driver I see a lot of pensioners every day that can’t even afford the taxi fare, and we often give them free rides,” says Abrahams.

He revealed that they get extorted by gangsters every day who demand free lifts and payment so he decided to give back to those who deserve it.

From 9 am on weekdays and 10 am on weekends pensioners older than 70 can ride for free as long as they are going to Athlone or Cape Town.

Abrahams was taken aback by the response that he received on Facebook and is now appealing to taxi drivers to open their hearts and extend the same offer to pensioners.

“I hope they will also do this and together we can help make the last years of their lives better. They have given so much to us as children and as a community,” adds Abrahams.

Pastor Abie Clayton hailed the initiative and said that it was something positive that the community really needed.
