- A plus size model, Thick Leeyonce, has defied social norms by walking the runway at the South Africa Fashion Week alongside ‘skinny girls’
- She even attracted the attention of famous rapper Nicki Minaj
- Now, she wants to empower other South African women by helping them realise they are beautiful just the way they are
Lesego Legobane, or most commonly known as Thick Leeyonce, is probably one of the most inspirational women in South Africa now.
Thick Leeyonce has managed to turn curves to cash, all while encouraging other South African women to ignore what society says about how “beautiful women” should look.
The blogger and plus size model shared an inspirational message on her Twitter account last week, where she spoke out about the pressure society puts on women to look a certain way.
“Your self love, it scares them. You loving yourself, it scares them. You liberating yourself from all their standards, it scares them”, she said in the video.
Thick Leeyonce adds society constantly attempts to break women down with unrealistic standards, so that they keep believing they are ugly.
She said most companies depend on women believing they are ugly, so if women realised their true beauty, it would hurt their pocket.
Her video received a widely positive response from tweeps, who praised her for her courage challenge the perception society creates surrounding beauty.
Since starting her career as a blogger and model, she has made it her mission to empower other women. But it does not mean she does not face backlash from those who still cling to society’s idea of ‘beauty’.
In 2017, Thick Leeyonce was honoured at the South African fashion week, where she walked along side ‘skinny’ girls.
However, the curvy model shared a heartfelt story about her experience with haters.
But, despite haters trying to bring her down, the model never stopped chasing her dreams. She already has 345 000 followers. She eve got the attention of international superstar Nicki Minaj.
Thick Leeyonce has come a long way, but she is not done yet. Her body positive message would continue to reach countless women, and we can’t wait to see the impact she would make on others.
