Halala: SA Runner Irvette Van Zyl Breaks Ultra Marathon Record

Irvette van Zyl has made herself and the rest of South Africa super proud after she came in at number one at Nedbank's Runified world marathon that took place recently in Gqerberha.

The talented distance runner not only took first place at the marathon, but she also broke a previous world record after finishing the race at 3:04:23, beating the previous record by a whole three minutes.

Van Zyl subsequently walked away with R100k for winning the 50km race and another R150k for beating a world record. Locals were super proud of them and wasted no time congratulating them heartily in various online posts.

Briefly News also reported that South African athletes, led by Akani Simbine, have bagged a gold medal in the 4x100m quartet to a dramatic victory at the World Athletics Relays in Poland on Sunday.

Simbine is one of Mzansi’s finest athletes and took over the baton three metres down on Brazil's Paulo Andre Camilo de Oliveira but managed to snatch victory on the line by a hundredth of a second in a time of 38.71sec.

Staged in Silesia in Poland, the race was so tight that the Brazilians were celebrating before the South Africans were announced as winners.
