Professor Thuli Madonsela has made her views on the R350 Covid-19 relief grant very clear. In a series of tweets, Madonsela wrote that she thinks the grant should not be stopped as many people still rely on it.

"#PayTheGrants. The #DistressGrant should continue from May onwards till a permanent solution is found as a matter of #SocialJustice," wrote in a tweet.

"There is no basis other than that those are the unconscionable privileges colonial and apartheid rulers granted themselves. In fidelity to our egalitarian Constitution, some of these benefits must go as we tighten our belts to pay for necessities such as the R350 #distressgrant," she also wrote.

"R350 is not much at all, it barely scrapes the surface for the minimum requirement a person needs to survive but for the grant receivers, it is food on the table, money for job seeking etc. To take away that barest of minimums is a grave indictment on the moral Fibre of government."

Briefly News also reported the ANC has urged the government to allow unemployed people to access the R350 relief grant to help reduce the negative economic effects of Covid-19 . The temporary grant was made available last year of South Africa was hit with its first wave of Covid-19 which resulted in a national lockdown.

Now the government is being urged to reintroduce the relief grant as the pressure of the level 3 lockdown grows. Civil society has been highly critical of the government for halting the relief grant, which has been a huge help to desperate citizens.

The ANC national executive committee had resolved that the government must extent the grant as the country grapples with the second wave of the virus. President Cyril Ramaphosa said that the government would be asked to consider extending the grant but he did not reveal how much longer the lockdown will persist.
