The South African Football Association has vowed to leave no stone unturned as they probe the ugly scenes that happened in Tshwane last weekend. SAFA has launched an investigation into allegations that the Mamelodi Sundowns fans were launched to attack former coach Pitso Mosimane.

This comes after the Brazilians failed to reach the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League as they lost to Al Ahly on aggregate. A mob of angry fans was seen outside the Lucas Moripe Stadium, chanting Mosimane’s name and that he was a traitor as some also insulted him.

SAFA CEO Tebogo Motlanthe has told TimesLIVE that the association will only institute its probe once the report from the NEC member who was head of the delegation (HoD) for the match‚ Pius Nqandela‚ has been received. He said:

“We are going to wait for the report from Mr Nqandela to say‚ ‘This is what happened’‚ so that we are not seen to be pre-judging or taking sides.
“The report from Mr Nqandela will come with its own recommendations of course. After taking that report we’ll go through the recommendations and it will go through to a suitable committee to say‚ ‘These are the issues’.
“Remember in terms of South African law‚ you don’t want to also bring the subject of double jeopardy. If Sundowns are to act tomorrow and take action against them [the wrongdoers] to say‚ ‘Safa‚ this is the action we have taken’‚ then Safa’s hands are tied.

“So Safa cannot stand up now and say‚ ‘This is the kind of action we are looking for’. What we are saying is that it must be the kind of action that ensures these things cannot happen again. That’s our position.”

Meanwhile, EWN reported that Motlanthe said the individuals who insulted the former Bafana Bafana coach have also humiliated the entire football fraternity in Mzansi.

He was quoted as saying:

“These individuals not only humiliated coach Pitso Mosimane‚ they brought the name of the country into disrepute. SAFA will leave no stone unturned in identifying these individuals and hand out the harshest of penalties to them. Mosimane is our proud ambassador and what these people did needs to be condemned by all civilised people.”

Briefly News also reported that South Africans have been left truly appalled by the way Sundowns fans treated coach Mosimane after a recent match between Ahly and Mamelodi Sundowns.
