- A local man has sparked one heated internet debate after expressing his views on whites who speak African languages
- Although Christo Thurston is a white man who speaks fluent Sesotho, he says it should not be celebrated as any achievement
-Mzansi took to the comments section, sharing their thoughts on the matter
Christo Thurston has sparked one very interesting social media debate after claiming it is not at all impressive for whites to speak African languages and that it should not be celebrated as any sort of achievement.
The fluent Sesotho speaker took to his Twitter account and made this sweeping claim.
"I repeat, Bazalwane. There is nothing special about a mlungu who speaks African languages. No one ever shakes the xibelani when an African person speaks English. We must liberate our minds from the chains of colonial thinking." he captioned the passionate post.
While some social media users found the post ironic, given the fact that Christo has gained much of his Internet fame because he's a white man speaking an African language, others completely shared his sentiment.
Check out some of the comments below:
"I'm glad you said this. Manje people when they see a mlungu fluent on an African language they act as if they have seen God himself!"
"Bazakes, this has nothing to do with colonial thinking, a person that goes out of his way to learn a language just to enhance their communication skills is one special kind, you didn't have to learn vernacular languages but you went out of your way that makes you a special lekgoa"
"It's funny how the majority agree with you since it's being said by a white person yet they attacked Atandwa Kani when he said the very same thing wow! You are correct my brother it's very annoying."
"This is the same as me speaking fluent English or Afrikaans, there is nothing special."
