Transport MEC Jacob Mambolo has said that the decision to cancel e-toll in the Gauteng region is an imminent one. While Mambolo made it clear that he is not saying e-toll is already scrapped in the area, many people have taken it that way.

Stephen Grootes recently announced that e-toll has been scrapped and this left Mambolo claiming that the radio host had "distorted" his words. Mambolo then did an interview with a local publication to set the record straight that he did not say it was officially scrapped but rather that the decision was going to be made - eventually.

"I didn’t say the e-tolls have been scrapped. I said we have been told the announcement is imminent, this has been said many times and then that announcement can be made,” Mamabolo said according to a The Citizen article.

Meanwhile, locals have already welcomed the news and have had this to say on the matter:

Ayondat Silwane said:

"Oops, sadly he has already made a u-turn on that e-toll saga in just less than 3hrs. I guess that's the so-called leadership Mzansi needs right there. I hope to loyal ANC voters, he's the next President in waiting right there. Cause everything in the ANC of our times goes."

Tsholofelo Matlala said:

"Ai these ministers are forever taking decisions but dololo implementation, therefore, no changes."

Dawie Fourie said:

"It took them long enough, to come to this decision."

Briefly News previously reported that according to Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula, a discussion between the Department of Transport and the National Treasury is nearing conclusion as they converse on the future of the e-toll system, with a final decision expected within the next two weeks.

The statement has been met with scepticism by the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa), emphasising that the lack of trust is so wide that every time they've set a date for a finalised decision, they have postponed it.

Mbalula had responded to Dennis Ryder, a Democratic Alliance (DA) MP and member of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), who confronted the issue while stating that a conclusion has been due for some time with multiple deadlines being missed. =
