Top Cop Fired and DA Welcomes Dismissal, Calls for SAPS Stability

- Western Cape SAPS detective Jeremy Veary has been dismissed and the DA welcomes this decision by the police as it brings stability to the force

- Veary has been found guilty of misconduct after he made a number of posts on Facebook in the last two years, this is what caused him to lose his position

The Democratic Alliance (DA) expressed its pleasure with the firing of Western Cape SAPS detective chief Jeremy Vearey on Monday. Vearey was found guilty of misconduct last week in a leaked 14-page memorandum after making numerous posts on Facebook between 2020 and 2021.

Khehla Sitole, the national police commissioner, has since fired Veary. After a disciplinary trial presided over by Eastern Cape police commissioner Liziwe Ntshinga, the former detectives chief was found guilty of bringing SAPS into contempt.

The DA in the Western Cape has called for stability within SAPS in the province, according to EWN.

“The latest developments speak to a greater need for stability within the SAPS management here in the Western Cape and therefore the DA reiterates our call for the mandate on police services to be decentralised to the authority of the provincial government," said Community Safety spokesperson, Reagen Allen.

The ANC on the other hand is not happy with Veary's dismissal and have expressed their displeasure.

"We are angered by General Veary's dismissal. He has served our struggle faithfully and also became a police officer hated by the criminals in our province," they told News24.

In other mainstream news, Briefly News reported that Bheki Cele addressed the community who lost faith in the SAPS. Minister of Police Bheki Cele stated on Monday, 31 May that it pained him to hear the complaints and concerns from the residents of Olievenhoutbosch, south of Pretoria.

The community stated that there has been a breakdown in the trust shared between them and police officers. Cele took time out to visit the community and allowed residents to air their grievances about the rise in crime in the area.

Gangsterism, rape, police mismanagement and poor response time were just a few of the issues raised. The minister stated that he would be personally intervening in the township but added that he needed time to deliver a satisfactory response to community members.
