Covid19 Update: Highest Recorded Coronavirus Cases in 4 Months Signals 3rd Wave

- Mzansi has recorded the highest number of new Covid-19 cases in more than four months which indicates the country is now entering the third wave

- The Health Department has revealed that 5 728 cases were recorded in the past 24 hours in Mzansi and that 110 people lost their lives due to the virus

- Dr Zweli Mkhize's department reports that the Gauteng province is experiencing a greater surge in new coronavirus infections

The Mzansi Health Department has reported the highest number of new Covid-19 infections in more than four months. The new statistics signal that South Africa is now entering the third wave of the pandemic.

Dr Zweli Mkhize's department said in the past 24 hours, 5 782 cases were recorded bringing the total number of positive coronavirus cases to 1 675 013.

The department said another 110 South Africans passed away due to Covid-19 related complications. The total number of deaths now stands at 56 711, according to the statement released by Mkhize's department.

According to a graph posted by the department late on Wednesday, 2 June, Gauteng is experiencing a greater surge in new infections than the rest of the country.

Over 1 million vaccinated

In other news, Briefly News reported that Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize announced on Tuesday, 1 June that over one million South Africans have been vaccinated against Covid-19.

The total number of people vaccinated is 1 045 104. The above number includes 479 768 frontline healthcare workers and over 565 336 citizens who are over the age of 60. The frontline healthcare workers were vaccinated during the Sisonke Programme in Phase 1.

The elderly citizens have been participating in the inoculation drive since the start of Phase 2 in mid-May.
