Remembering Andile Zondi, the dad who supports his daughters by picking through waste

Last year South Africa learned of Andile Zondi an unemployed dad who would do anything to support his family. After losing his job almost 10 years ago he was faced with the grim prospect of finding a way to provide for his family.

He wakes up at 04:00 every morning to get his two daughters, aged six and thirteen, ready for school before he heads out to the New England Landfill site.

He was introduced to waste picking by his older brother and has said that there has been a huge increase in the number of pickers at the landfill site.

In the beginning, he struggled to swallow his pride but since then he has come to terms with his new lifestyle and takes pride in the fact that he can provide for his family.

He doesn't make a great deal of money, he manages to salvage enough to make between R1400 and R2000 a month.

His two children do receive social grants but these go to the mother who does not live with them.
