The South African football family is divided on social media on the quality of former Bafana Bafana stars, Steven Pienaar and Teko Modise. Many argue that the ex-Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates midfielder, Modise, is more worthy of recognition compared to Pienaar.

Some people have pointed out that Modise will never enjoy international status like Pienaar, who played his best football in England.

@PatBafo's tweet has sparked debate in the online community and Briefly News takes a look at the opposing views.

“You can take both Teko Modise and Steven Pienaar to any township in South Africa, you will see the reaction of our people towards Teko Modise. The brand Teko Modise has more weight than Steven Pienaar.”

“You can take Teko to England/Netherlands, they will treat him like a sidekick. It goes with where did you make your name bafo.”

@LufunoSjavo said:

"Teko is a local brand while Steve is an international brand, don't insult our intelligence by saying Teko brand has more weight than Pienaar, you will fool 217 fans..”

"Teko is bigger to us at home. Yes, Schillo was a wizard at Goodison Park but Teko pulled monster displays of wizardry week in, week out right in front of us, so we will be biased and love Teko more.”

@langa_Sothole said:

“Teko is only popular in Mzansi, Steven is a world well-known brand. I have no malice against Teko but you can’t compare umuntu who has been praised by Sir Ferguson so to a local brand. Different levels bafo.”

"Our kids identify more with the local players, why I don't know. Probably because most don't watch overseas football.”

@AthiB said:

"You are correct but you could've given the reason why that is the case, our people who do not have the privilege of watching European football might not have witnessed what Steven Pienaar achieved on European soil..”

“Not a fair comparison.”
