- James has started an initiative to fix Limpopo schools in honour of his son
The father of a five-year-old boy who drowned in a pit toilet in school is determined to help improve the conditions of Limpopo's schools.
James Komape started his initiative in honour of his son, Michael Komape, Briefly.co.za learned. His aim is also to benefit learners and safeguard their safety.
The dad approached the local chief at his village of Chebeng, who granted him a piece of land to build a library. He is now seeking donations to build it.
In the meantime, he started a drive to stock the library at Hosea Ntsoane Primary School in Chebeng. The library has received books and desks from well-wishers.
Speaking to sapeople.com, James said:
This is something that I am doing not only to help the children, but I am also doing it in honour of Michael. I don’t want my son to be forgotten, I want his name and memory to live on.
Even before he died, we had planned to do this library initiative together, so I am continuing it. Once we manage to build a library, it will be named after him.
He expressed disappointment that since his son died, there has no visible improvement of school toilets in the area.
James and his family were at Bhisho High Court in the Eastern Cape recently to observe a case brought by Equal Education as part of its FixOurSchools campaign.
Just a day before the case, five-year-old Lumka Mtetwa also died in a pit toilet at Luna Primary School in Bizana, Eastern Cape.
