On Saturday evening the cricketing world was stunned when Australian captain Steve Smith admitted to deliberately tampering with the condition of the ball during the course of the day’s play.

This came after TV cameras showed Cameron Bancroft shining the ball in an odd way and trying to hide something down his trousers. The event has become known as #Sandpapergate.

Unsurprisingly social media went wild after the TV footage was aired, various memes have popped up online, most feature sandpaper in some way shape or form.

Briefly.co.za discovered the below tweet which shows a rather clever young cricket lover asking Australian spin bowler Nathan Lyon for his autograph.

The young supporter asked Lyon to sign a piece of yellow sandpaper instead of the usual mini-bat, ball or poster.

To his eternal credit, Lyon saw the lighter side of the moment and smiled broadly at the child, but he refused to sign the piece of sandpaper.

The scandal has rocked Australia to its core and even Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull got involved. He released a statement saying how shocked and saddened he was by the incident.

Cricket Australia took the unprecedented step of asking Smith and Vice-captain David Warner to step down during the test. Smith has been banned for the fourth and final Test in Johannesburg.

Meanwhile, the South African team shrugged off the incident and romped to a 322 run win on day four of the controversial Third Test. Australia seemed incapable of focusing on the game and collapsed to 107 all out.
