For the first 24 years of his life, Chris Rickerson looked like he would become one of the countless thousands of people who faced a grim future. Chris grew up with a drug-addicted mother in near squalor conditions.

By the time Chris was 14, he was addicted to drugs himself, despite his early childhood promise to himself to never turn out like his mom.

Chris dropped out of school and started selling drugs, by the time he turned 24 he realised that his life as it was then could only lead to him ending in jail or in a coffin.

Briefly.co.za discovered that Chris found a sober-living centre after deciding to change his life for the better. While at the centre he started working as a manual labourer lugging around bricks and scaffolding.

This job led Chris to other jobs, including a regional manager position for a poker league and a truck dispatcher. It was at this time when Chris got his big break.

He met a group of doctors who had a vacant building and said he could use the building for any business he wanted and could also keep 40% of the income he generated. He turned the building into a successful dining hall.

While running the dining hall, Chris worked as a sales rep for a staffing company, he decided to take a leap of faith and in 2013 started Elite Staffing Solutions.

The aim of the company is to help people, who like Chris, need a second chance at life. The company opens at 5:15 each morning, applicants are required to wear boots and have a positive attitude.

Chris says he loves giving people who had no hope a chance at turning their lives around, just like the doctors did for him all those years ago.

He says today his mom is clean and sober and lives with him and his children.
