The president of Haiti Jovenel Moise has been killed. The 53-year-old was shot dead by a group of Spanish speaking gunmen in a nighttime raid on his private residence in Port-au-Prince at 1am on Wednesday, 7 July.

According to a statement from the country's interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph and cited by international media, Moise's wife Martine was also injured in the attack.
The country is currently under the control of the police and armed forces, said Joseph:
"All measures had been taken to guarantee the continuance of the state."
Moise assumed the presidency in 2017 after his predecessor, Michel Martelly, stepped down. However, during his tenure, he faced accusations of corruption and was challenged by waves of often violent anti-government protests.
Fire breaks out at Synagogue Church during TB Joshua’s funeral service
In some more world news, Briefly News previously reported that a fire incident occurred at the headquarters of the Synagogue Church Of All Nations (SCOAN) in Lagos Monday night, July 5, during the candlelight procession in honour of the late founder of the Church, Prophet TB Joshua.
Premium Times reported that a storehouse in the church’s premises was gutted by fire around 11pm. TB Joshua’s wife, Evelyn Joshua, led the candlelight procession at the SCOAN Faith Resort in the Ikotun area of Lagos.
The publication stated that the worshippers prevented the fire from spreading by using containers to scoop water from near the church and dashing to douse the flames.
The Synagogue Church via its Facebook page on Tuesday, July 5, confirmed the fire incident in a press statement. It described the occurrence as a minor electrical fire incident at a storehouse within the church complex, noting that the fire was quickly brought under control without any injuries.
The official statement issued by the church partly read:
''In the late evening of Monday 5th July 2021, there was a minor electrical fire incident at a store house within The Synagogue, Church Of All Nations (SCOAN) complex. The incident was quickly brought under control without any injuries.
''As part of the preparedness for the week-long services celebrating the life and legacy of Prophet TB Joshua, The SCOAN has worked closely with relevant government agencies including the Lagos State Fire Services, whose members were on ground at the time of the incident.''
The church stated that there there is no cause for alarm, noting that the services celebrating the life and legacy of Prophet TB Joshua will continue as scheduled.
