Graca Machel pens heart-breaking letter to ‘big sister’ Winnie Mandela after her death

Nelson Mandela’s widow, Graca Machel, has penned a letter to his ex-wife Winnie Madikizela Mandela. In the letter, Machel expresses her sadness at the passing of Winnie.

Machel goes on to say she is struggling to come to terms with the death of her ‘big sister’ Winnie. The women have been friends for decades and in recent years they grew increasingly close to one another.

Machel lovingly describes Winnie as the perfect big sister and said Winnie was a person of brilliant wisdom, fierce defiance and stylish beauty.

Briefly.co.za gathered that Machel said in the letter she hoped South Africans would continue to be as uncompromising as Winnie was when it comes to defending human rights.

“The extraordinary life you led is an example of resilient fortitude and inextinguishable passion that is a source of inspiration to us all of how to courageously confront challenges with unwavering strength and determination,” she said.

Machel said Winnie’s legacy would be an uplifting beacon from which all South Africans could continue to draw strength during trying times.

She said Winnie loved South Africa and its people unconditionally and sacrificed much of her life for the freedom of modern South Africa.
