Couple keep the streets of Pietermaritzburg clean out of the goodness of their hearts

Armstrong was born and raised in Pietermaritzburg and has seen first hand how the city has deteriorated.

Nel moved to PMB in the 80's and immediately fell in love with the city, but like Armstrong he felt that the city was fas not being properly maintained.

He was involved in an accident in 1994 that left him in intensive care for three months but that didn't stop him from keeping the city clean.

The couple receive no funding and pay for everything out of their own pocket.

“Shoes we wear tear, because we walk long distances. Sometimes we don’t even have plastic bags to carry the litter we’ve picked up but that does not stop us from keeping the place we live clean,”said Armstrong.
