Henri Schoeman has given Team South Africa the perfect start to the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia. Schoeman won the triathlon to hand Team SA their first medal on day one of the competition.
Schoeman won his event in a time of 52 minutes 31 seconds. Schoeman fought hard for his victory, he finished the swimming leg in third place, but lost places during the transition to the bicycle leg.
Things appeared to go pear-shaped for Schoeman as he dropped out of contention after the first lap of the running leg, he showed true South African grit and fought his way back to the lead group, before surging ahead on lap two.
Briefly.co.za gathered that Schoeman had been training incredibly hard for the event since he finished third at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
Schoeman’s teammate Richard Murray finished sixth, while Wian Sullwald finished in 20th position.
Australia’s Jacob Birtwhistle finished second and Scotland’s Marc Austin finished third.
The result means at the end of Day one of the competition Team South Africa is in joint first place on the medals table, Bermuda and Malaysia have one gold medal each.
