- Somizi Mhlongo was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth
- The eccentric entertainer is one of few celebrities few who have gone from rags to riches, to rags and back again
- A day in the star's life proves that success is not handed on a silver platter, but is hard-earned
It is easy to think that the likes of Somizi Mhlongo are one of the lucky few that are simply born for fame and fortune and get to enjoy an easy lifestyle without even having to break a sweat for it. However, as we have come to learn from the star himself, that could not be farther from the truth.
A typical day in Somizi’s life starts off at 5:30am with a workout, which is followed by hosting a radio show on SABC’s Metro FM by 8am. His reality show, Living The Dream With Somizi, also requires time and is usually filmed daily until well-into the afternoons.
These are just some of Somizi’s daily to-do-list items; not counting the extra gigs that he regularly engages in such as the gala dinner at Clarens for which he was an MC, only to have to wake up at 03:00 am the following morning just to make his usual Metro FM radio hosting shift.
But, Briefly.co.za learned that such hard work and dedication has always been the necessity for Somizi’s success. In a 2016 radio interview with Mac G on 947, Somizi opened up about hitting rock bottom, being broke and in rags between 2006 to 2009. He told Mac G that he became broke due to his carelessness with money and that those had been the toughest years of his life.
“I am glad that I never took drugs, or any other substances. Because when you’re broke and you take drugs, you become broker. You know, you become brokest [sic]," he said.
Somizi's book titled Dominoes was launched in June of 2018. He has been quoted as saying that if his story could inspire only one person, he would have succeeded.
The socialite, performer, choreographer, emcee, reality star and fitness guru was sharing his success story, and was quoted as saying: “I know for a fact now for the past year I’m the biggest personality. I might not be the richest but I’m ranked there. I’m safe.”
