'We are friends more than anything else': Childhood couple celebrates 50 years of marriage

A couple in Hillcrest, Durban, is celebrating an astonishing 50 years of marriage.

Richard and Nontando Duma got married on 30 March, 1968, Briefly.co.za learned. Their friendship, which evolved into love, started when they were still children.

Speaking to highwaymail.co.za, Richard said they admired each other secretly from a distance until he gained courage to approach her.

Richard said:

I use to admire her from a distance and after the first walk, it became a normal for me to accompany her.

For her part, Nontando said she also had feelings for him:

I did not even know his name. I think I might have been 12 at that time and I would tell my cousin about my crush whenever he went past my house with his friends.

The loving couple said honesty, trust, tolerance, and being friends above all else are the secrets to their incredibly long marriage.

They cherished their sweet memories and recalled how they were there for each other during the difficult times, such as when they lost their second child aged 15 months.

Richard and Nontando, who have four children and five grandchildren, advised couples to always renew their love with actions:

Another important thing in a marriage is to always renew your love with actions. Your love won’t mature if you just sit back and not do nice and new things for your partner.
