- The Johannesburg Correctional Centre Prison has seen 16 prisoners escape on Monday morning
- The prisoners allegedly broke through the iron bars, broke a section of the wall and escaped through the fence
- The investigation is still ongoing
The Gauteng Correctional Services said a total of 16 prisoners have escaped from the Johannesburg prison known as "Sun City".
"They escaped through a pipe shaft and used an object to break the wall, then proceeded to the fence," said correctional services department spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo.
Briefly.co.za believes the department is taking the matter very seriously.
"The investigation is still ongoing but it is something we are taking quite seriously as the department," Nxumalo said.
The prisoners were being housed in the awaiting trial section when they escaped at around 03:00 on Monday morning.
The escape took place from the Medium A Johannesburg Correctional Centre.
The investigation into their escape is still underway and a manhunt has been launched.
Thus far, none of the escapees have been rearrested.
