- Barbara and Derek Brown marked their 50th wedding anniversary recently
- They said being supportive of each other is the secret to their long marriage
- They have 3 children and 6 grandchildren
A couple in Mount Edgecombe, KwaZulu-Natal, is celebrating a whopping 50 years of marriage.
Barbara and Derek were separately on holiday in the Drakensberg when they first met, Briefly.co.za learned.
Speaking to Northglennews.co.za, the couple said it was love at first sight — and the love has grown stronger since then.
Asked what the secret to their long marriage is, Barbara said:
It is letting your partner do what they want to do and support them. We have allowed each other to be who we truly are. We’re also very supportive of each other.
We get along so well and we always support each other. The key to a successful marriage is to do things together as a couple and embrace each other’s differences.
The couple said it's important for young couples to base their relationships on friendship and humour.
They both love playing golf, while Derek is a big fan of bridge and has even represented KwaZulu-Natal in national contests.
Derek and Barbara have three children and six grandchildren.
