Reports from Dubai point towards to Ajay Gupta himself being responsible for the arrest of the South African businessman, Justin van Pletzen, who filmed him outside of the Indian Consulate in Dubai. Sources claim Gupta opened a case of invasion of privacy against van Pletzen.

Van Pletzen shot to fame in South Africa when a video of his encounter with Gupta in Dubai went viral. Gupta seemed jovial and even shook van Pletzen’s hand during the encounter, but obviously didn’t like the questions which van Pletzen asked him.

Van Pletzen remains locked up and his scheduled to appear before a Dubai court on Monday. He is said to be fine, but anxious about the court appearance and what might happen.

Briefly.co.za gathered that the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) confirmed that van Pletzen was still in prison. Reports on Thursday indicated that van Pletzen had been released without charge.

Initially, van Pletzen’s arrest was thought to be on a filming without permission charge.

Dubai authorities have remained tight-lipped about the exact nature of the charges against the South African businessman. Van Pletzen has been living and working in Dubai since 2016.

He said when he saw Gupta he wanted to tackle him, but he knew the punishment under Dubai law for such an action would be harsh. He said he decided to ask the questions which all South Africans wanted the answers to.

Van Pletzen asked Gupta when he would be returning to South Africa.

Gupta appeared relaxed and told van Pletzen he was still waiting for authorities in South Africa to give him an answer. "The day they give a reply, I'll go there," Gupta added.

Gupta is considered a fugitive by South African authorities. Hawks officials said it was up to the investigating officer to find a way to bring Gupta back to South Africa.
