Siyabonga Mthembu was not born into a privileged family and had to work hard to get to where he is today.

“I grew up in a four-roomed house in Ntuzuma, KZN. I lived with my brother and six sisters. His first acting job was on an SABC 1 drama series called A Place Called Home, in which he played a character called Cassius. Soon after that, the work began to pile up.

He went on to perform on shows such as Home Affairs, Rhythm City and Sokhulu and Partners. Currently, he is acting in Ring of Lies as Gazini.

Besides acting, Siya is also a comedian and was hooked on telling jokes ever since he watched Eddie Murphy Raw on DVD.

“I knew Eddie was an actor and I admired his honesty about his relationship with his family. He turned that into jokes.”

He is an accomplished comedian who has performed with the likes of Thapelo Tips Seemise, Ntosh Madlingozi and Jay Boogie at the Shampoonaiza Comedy Show.

Siya is also a singer and makes African music which is influenced by rap and jazz. He has a single, Nkanyezi, out on Itunes.
