-Thousands attended the official event to pay respects to the late struggle hero including leaders from countries around Africa and the rest of the world
- The night before the funeral Madikizela-Mandela's body arrived back at her Soweto home and mourners lined the streets to the stadium as her casket made its way to the stadium the next morning
The ceremony concluded 10 days of national mourning during which time flags around the country were flown at half mast and thousands of South Africans paid tribute to the iconic struggle hero.
Winnie Mandela died in Johannesburg aged 81 on April 2 after a long illness.
Originally most well known for helping to keep Nelson Mandela's dream of a non-racial South Africa alive while he was behind bars for 27 years, Madikizela-Mandela was also a leader in her own right whom many felt should have become the first female president of the country.
She worked tirelessly during the years of Apartheid to support and empower those fighting to achieve freedom in the country, stepping into a vacuum of leadership at the time which was the result of many of the leadership having been jailed or exiled.
Hundreds of people lined the township's streets as a black hearse carrying her body slowly drove to her house led by uniformed men bearing the flag of Mandela's African National Congress (ANC) which also draped her casket.
