Nomvula Ngcikiza reached her 10th birthday on the 31st of March at the Summit Lifestyle centre in East London surrounded by her nine children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
When she was young she was a farmer at her birthplace in Tsolo, he seventh child, Nondyebo Majeke, fondly recalls how she was a strict parent who knew every verse in the bible.
“She raised us according to the values of the church. All we did was farm and sell crops in our village in Tsolo,” said Majeke.
Ngcikiza never earned a salary in her life despite graduating from the St Cuthbert Mission College in Butterworth with a domestic science certificate.
Her husband, a teacher, was also from Tsolo and died of natural causes in 1984.
She has lived long enough to see her 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren become successful and acred for many of them at her house in Tsolo.
Now she is being cared for at Kennersley Park senior citizens village in Bonza Bay.
