- Were it up to social media alone, Cape Town would already have renamed it's airport, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela International
- Julius Malema, right at the end of his speech at the funeral of Madikizela-Mandela put it out there that the Mother City should name their airport after the Mother of the Nation
- People have even started to refer to the airport as Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Airport despite it still being official called Cape Town International
It almost seemed like an after thought, seemingly tacked onto the end of a speech which was as emotional as it was powerful.
Julius Malema, as he ended off his tribute to the woman he thought of as a mother and called "Mama" throughout his speech, uttered a challenge to the government: "If it is true that the ANC want to honour Winnie Mandela, name the Cape Town Airport, Winnie Mandela Airport," he said, to thunderous applause from the thousands who had come to pay their last respects.
Briefly.co.za gathers that this challenge has not gone unnoticed. As early as minutes after the speech had ended twitter began seeing an uptick of people agreeing with Malema and even the government tweeted his challenge.
A swift acting Wikipedia editor even amended the airport's page, while others used photoshop skills to change road signs and signage in pictures of the airport in support of the call by Malema.
The huge amount of celebrities on South African Twitter also supported the call including digital media entrepreneur Thabo Molefe, better known as Thabo Touch. He said it could serve as one among many legacy projects under the new leadership of President Cyril Ramaphosa.
While spin doctor, Mohau Lusaba, DJ Franky of 5FM also showed support for Malema's call saying it would do a lot to transform a city that was in dire need of transformation.
Someone has even set up a digital petition to sign to show support for the idea encouraging people to sign to show they are behind the idea in the hopes that it will make it happen sooner.
Regardless of what Cape Town's airport is called now or in the future, there are some who will now always think of it as being the Winnie Mandela Airport, which was probably the point behind the suggestion in the first place.
