- Niña was struggling with her law degree after losing her sister
- Her mom, Zanelle, therefore enrolled for the same degree to offer her support
- They graduated together at Wits earlier this year
When Dr Zanelle Mngadi realised that her daughter, Niña Hammond, was having a hard time with her law degree, she enrolled for the same degree to offer her support.
Amazingly, they graduated together from Wits University earlier this year, Briefly.co.za learned.
Niña went through a period of depression following the tragic murder of her elder sister in 2013.
Dr Mngadi holds 10 degrees and is a respected finance scholar based at the University of Zurich, Switzerland.
Despite her incredibly busy schedule that also includes running her Emangadini foundation, she managed to complete the four-year degree in three years. Her aim was to help her daughter pull out of depression.
Speaking to Jacaranda FM, Dr Mngadi said even though she supported Niña, they actually supported each other get through their tragedy.
She explained that she was at a US university teaching when she decided to come back to South Africa to be there for her daughter:
I said to myself, 'If I'm such a brilliant professor, why is my daughter failing family law twice?' At that minute, I packed my bags. I said to myself, 'I'm going to be a professor to my daughter.'
The two use their amazing story to inspire other people to help those around them be better versions of themselves.
