The international football industry is a multi-billion-rand empire, so it is no wonder the top athletes in the sport take home huge pay checks.
And some African players’ talent resulted in them being in high demand- which meant clubs would pay them generously to join their teams.
Briefly.co.za looked at the top five African players, who set back the clubs they joined by millions. So, here’s a list of the most expensive African players of all time.
1. Cedric Bukambu
At the top of our list is the French-born footballer, who racks up a massive £65.4 million, which is more than R1.1 billion.
Bukambu currently plays for the Beijing Guoan, however he started his international career the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2015.
2. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
Aubameyang was given £56 million, R953 million to join Arsenal. The clubs’ manager, Arsene Wenger brought in the Gabon player from Borussia Dortmund.
3. Naby Keita
The Guinean midfielder would be joining Liverpool for £48 million, R817 million. The 25-year-old currently plays for a German team, but he would officially walk over to Liverpool on 1 July 2018.
4. Mo Salah
Liverpool paid £39 million, R663 million, to buy the Egyptian from his previous team, AS Roma. However, many believe it was a steal for the major football club, because it paid off to have Salah on their side.
He has been regarded as one of the best players.
5. Sadio Mane
Coming in at number five is Sadio Mane, who joined Liverpool after they paid £34 million (R578 million) for him.
The Senegalese forward, who played at the Merseyside giants’ unofficial academy, Southampton, was one of Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp’s early signing.
And, there you have it- the five most expensive African football players in the world.
