- Almeda is 72 and her husband Gary is 19
- They have been married for two years
- Although their marriage caused tension in their families, they are still together
A 19-year-old man and 72-year-old grandmother have been married for two years despite their massive 53-year age gap.
The Tennessee, US, couple say they love each other more than ever despite their marriage causing some tension in their families.
Almeda and Gary Hardwick met in 2016 and got hitched after just two weeks of dating, Briefly.co.za learned.
Speaking to Barcroft TV, Almeda said:
If you love somebody, age is just a number. I’ve now been happily married going on two years with my true soul mate.
We met at Chuck E Cheese, there was a birthday party there. I looked into his eyes and I just fell in love. I knew he was the one I wanted to spend my life with. I was never intimidated by the age at all.
It was Gary who popped the question. Almeda had just emerged from an unhappy relationship with a 77-year -old man.

For his part, Gary said he was drawn by Almeda's "beautiful, gorgeous blue eyes" and her personality:
She’s always full of laughter and we just connected so well. The chemistry was great. Everything about her has just captured my heart since day one.
The couple said they share similar interests and hobbies. Gary added that he has always been attracted to older women because of his "maturity."
However, there was some opposition to their relationship. Almeda's son hasn't spoken to her since she met Gary. Her grandchildren, Aaron and Indiana, also initially found it hard to accept.
However, they soon came around. Indiana said:
How can you not be supportive about that? For me personally, whenever they first got together it was a little bit weird. But I mean, we live in the 21st century and those things really shouldn’t matter.
Gary and Alemda hope to inspire others to understand that when it comes to love, age shouldn't matter. Gary said:
As long as you’re in love with that person, you should follow your heart and be happy and be yourself.
