For many young people, their last formal high-school dance is the first real chance they have to dress up and celebrate their youth, while trying on the trappings of adulthood.
Fortunes are spent on dance clothing. Many hours are spent dreaming of the event. Anxiety is often at an all time high as teens plan every aspect of their evening, including who their date for the night will be.
However, Briefly.co.za learned one young man didn’t waste a moment worrying about who he was going to take to the dance. He asked his Mum.
While a matric dance, ball, or whatever you might choose to call it is technically, “just a dance,” for many it is the culmination of their entire school social lives. Reputations are made, or broken forever by what happens on that magical night.
Most youngsters wouldn’t be seen dead with their parents as their date, or even with their parents in attendance at such an event.
Parents often have to do some work with their kids to help get them ready for the big night.
Joe Moreno wanted to have his mother attend his high school prom since she had missed her own. In the year she should have graduated high school, Joe’s mother, Vanessa, was more worried about baby clothes than ball gowns, she was 17 years old, and pregnant with Joe.
Teen pregnancy is a reality that causes many young women to drop out of school prematurely.
Joe's mum, Vanessa eventually dropped out of school in order to be the best mother to him that she could be. Consequently missing out on so many milestones on the road to adulthood that many teens take for granted.
Joe wanted to thank his mother for all she had sacrificed. He decided it would wonderful for her to come to his prom with him.
“It’s something that I’ve been planning on doing ever since I found out what prom was,” Joe said. “I have always told my mom about wanting to take her to my high school prom. She was really emotional … and really excited for the day to come. She always loved the idea.”
Later, Joe shared the experience on his Twitter page, where it went viral so quickly that he and his mother were shocked.
Although she only got to attend the prom 18 years later, Vanessa Moreno had the perfect night, with the perfect date. She spent it with a young man she loves more than anyone else in the world. What more could any girl ask for on her Prom night?
