Despite growing up with very little in the difficult Cape Flats area in Cape Town, Ashley Uys has managed to make a huge difference in people's lives.
The ambitious scientist and entrepreneur developed a testing kit that detects malaria in less than 30 minutes, Briefly.co.za learned.
This means patients can get quicker treatment, thus saving lives. Ashley's company, Medical Diagnostech, produces around 20 million testing kits per year for HIV, pregnancy, malaria, and drugs.
Ashley holds a Bsc and an Honours in Biotechnology from the University of the Western Cape. He started his first business at the age of 24 and never looked back.
The accomplished innovator has won various accolades, including the SAB Kick Start National Business of the Year Award in 2008 and the Western Cape Business Opportunity Forum Young Entrepreneur of 2010.
Forbes named him in its "30 Under 30: Africa’s Best Young Entrepreneurs" list in 2012, as well as one of Africa’s most promising entrepreneurs in 2014.
Speaking to Beautiful News, Ashley said his mission is to save lives while creating jobs in the process. He explained:
I grew up in the Cape Flats with very little. I've had to work very hard to be where I am today. My dreams inspired me to work harder.
In a continent where malaria claims hundreds of thousands of lives every year, the self-testing kit is becoming a reliable and affordable life saver. For me, it's very satisfying to know that lives are being saved and changed.
