Born in Johannesburg, and now living abroad in LA, 44 year-old Sharlto Copley, a South African actor and film producer.
Copley has wept the world with his performance in a local movie called District 9.

1. Improvising on the spot
“Fokin Prawns” magical lines in District 9 is how we all know Sharlto. All Wikus’ words we all his own work which most people have absolutely no idea he did that. The character’s lines has a very detailed script, but 100% of Wikus’s lines were improvised on the spot by Sharlto. This makes him a legend, wouldn’t you think?
2. His opportunity to star in The A-Team
Sharlto landed the role of H.M Murdock in The A-Team remake. This opportunity came straight after District 9, which put Sharlto in the international spot light.
When Sharlto was growing up, his parents didn’t allow him to watch the show. In desperation, he left a tape recorder behind the TV set, allowing him to listen to the show’s audio at a later stage. His master plan came together while his parents thought he was asleep.
3. His prank on Matt Damon
Elysium, a sci-fi epic, he starred alongside Matt Damon. Sharlto played the bad guy for a change, taking a page out of the method acting book and gave it to Matt. He will never forget this prank.
“I had made his trailer look like Kruger and his henchmen had been living in the trailer for a week,” Copley told Entertainment Weekly.
“There were bloodied limbs in the shower and the sink. There was blood on the sheets. I had left all my dirty clothes from the movie — my underwear, smelly socks — in his bed. There was p*rn in the DVD player. You know, just trash, everywhere.”

4. Sharlto and Neil Blomkamp
Neil Blomkamp, a South African director behind both Elysium and District 9, has been credit as the mastermind behind Sharlto’s rise in fame. The true is, Sharlto actually mentored Neil back in the day.
At the age of 22, Sharlto met the 16 year old Blomkamp. Having his own film production company, Sharlto provided his future director with access to his computers. Visual effects and 3D animation, were both Sharlto and Neil’s passion.
Back then, they had no idea that they would be animating prawns together.
5. A power SA star duo
We are pleased to say that after been a bit quite on the movie front over the past few years, Sharlto is back. And he is back with a major bang, bring along Charlize Theron.
Gringo is a 2018 crime-comedy film. It boasts stars like Amanda Seyfried and David Oyelowo. The story line is about a mild-mannered businessman who is sent to Mexico to deliver an experimental marijuana pill. A drug cartel kidnaps the man, and this brings so much laughter when he attempts to escape.
To see Sharlto and Charlize, two South African actors starring in the same film, will make SA so proud. The film is currently out.
