A Rwandan national was so determined to get her postgraduate degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) that she hitchhiked from Rwanda to South Africa.
Josiane Ayingeneye graduated with a Masters degree in Chemistry from UKZN in April, Briefly.co.za learned.
Her incredible journey started when she obtained a distinction at Nyamasheke Girls’ High School in Rwanda.
Not enough money for an air ticket.
Josiane then enrolled at the National University of Rwanda, where she obtained her Bachelor of Science in Bio-Organic Chemistry in 2012.
When she learned about the excellent research facilities at UKZN, she was determined to study there. However, she didn't have enough money for an air ticket.
The determined student then decided to hitchhike from Rwanda to South Africa with the help of Good Samaritans in 2015.
Happy and proud.
Speaking to Ndaba Online, a proud Josiane thanked her husband, Antoine Ayinkamiye, and her supervisor for their support. She said:
I am so proud and happy to be the first female in my family to complete a Masters degree.
All this success could not be achieved without the hard work, patience and scientific guidance of my supervisor, Professor Vincent Nyamori. His invaluable support will stay with me in my heart forever.
