South Africans on social media have reacted with outrage at the murder of a first year student at Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT), allegedly by her boyfriend.

Briefly.co.za understands that MUT's spokesperson, Bheki Hlophe, confirmed the incident, which took place on Tuesday night. In a statement, Hlophe said:

The university has learnt with shock of the sudden passing of Zolile Khumalo, a first-year Quantity Surveying student. [The] MUT warden at one of its outsourced residences, where the incident happened, reported that Zolile was shot and killed by an ex-student of the University yesterday [Tuesday].

The South African Student Congress (SASCO) and South African Democratic Students Movement (SADESMO) sent condolences to Zolile's family and friends.

Some social media users shared screenshots of a regret message allegedly posted by the boyfriend, Simkahle Mnisi, on Facebook. He allegedly wrote:

All is history now. If I had the power I was going to make her rise - from the dead - so that we can talk about the mistakes... but now she is gone before I could even tell her that I forgive her.

Others said Zolile was trying to break up with Simkahle but he allegedly refused. These claims have not been independently verified.
