A few eyebrows were raised when Fikile Mbalula, the ANC’s election head, attended and was part of the panel to announce the friendly match between Mamelodi Sundowns and Barecelona FC. This was during a press briefing held on Thursday at the Convention Centre.

Patrice Motsepe, Sundowns president, had the privilege of announcing the much awaited friendly between Sundowns and Barcelona.

The panel was made up of top government and football figures.

Sports Minister Thokozile Xasa, Minister of Energy Jeff Radebe, Mbalula, former Gauteng MEC Tokyo Sexwale, South African Football Association (Safa) Danny Jordaan, Safa CEO Dennis Mumble and La Liga president Javier Tebas.

The Motsepe Foundation is partnering with the Inter-Ministerial Committee of the South African government, the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Safa and La Liga to bring Barcelona to South African shores.

Whilst addressing the media, Mbalula said the public should not be concerned at seeing him seated among the panel. “When you saw me here you thought there is a reshuffle … [assuming] it happened last night … because they always happened at night.”

He redirected the reshuffle joke at Tokyo Sexwale, who he said had been also reshuffled.

Ending his charismatic address, Mbalula said he looked forward to a razzmatazz on the upcoming game.

He later took to Twitter and said people would get to meet their legends next Wednesday.
