- South Africans came together to help a talented athlete achieve his dreams
- After spotting a man training in the early morning hours with army boots
- A community stood together to help him achieve his potential
January this year, Midstream Estate residents spotted a man training in army boots during the early morning hours. So, he was approached by someone in the community to find out what his story is.
According to Esti Bester, a resident of the Midstream Estate, the man is called Joseph Thoka.
Thoka tends to some of the houses in the community as a gardener, but he is also a very talented athlete who qualified for the Comrades again.
The dedicated athlete man trains in the early morning hours then does his work throughout the day. So, in true South African style, the community came together to help out Thoka by getting his sponsors.
The community came together and bought him a new bed, they also helped him get a USN supplement sponsor.
Aside from that, the residents also got him a sponsorship at a local running club, which would help him travel to and from the comrades. The residents even booked his accommodation for his big race.
Thoka would also be included at a training camp in Dullstroom by John Hamlet, where some of the former Comrades winners trained.
And, he would be training in style with his new Garmin fitness watch and the several running shoes the community got for him.
Thoka now has all the tools to reach his target of a sub six-hour Comrades, which would mean he qualifies for a special Wally Haward silver medal or even a top 10 position.
