Finding the perfect prom dress is difficult. When this teenager finally founds hers, there was just that something missing. Taking it into her own hands, she started to rectify it.
A high school student in Birmingham, Alabama, Nazmayde Castillo with the help of her boyfriend MJ Johnson, found her prom dress. Johnson has a hefty Instagram following, thanks to his creative recreations of looks by the likes of Beyoncé and Nicki Minaj.
When the big day arrived, MJ shared photos of himself and Nazmayde in their outfits. Nazmayde’s gown was a stunning blue and cream, with layers of cobalt roses as the skirt.
After the photos were viewed, they were dozens of requests for where Nazmayde found her dress. It was MJ that revealed that the original dress was picked up for just $50 from Fashion Nova.
But there was more to the look than just some successful online shopping.
'I found it on @fashionnova for her and she had the idea to add flowers at the bottom ... that’s it,' MJ wrote in the caption of his post. 'A $50 dress is all flowers was all it took. We both creative as hell.'
MJ included a photo of the original dress, showing that is was a curve-hugging mini dress, with a skirt finishing above the knee.
Nazmayde had the help of her crafty aunt and took the original dress and created a beautiful skirt. Even a discerning eye would not have be able to tell the gown was a DIY job.
MJ told Teen Vogue, that 'the skirt took like two days because she had to buy more flowers.'
Once the flowers were sown together, Nazmayde finished off the dress with ‘a little touch of blue glitter’.
When the dress was finally completed, the couple posed for photos. MJ looked dapper in a cobalt blue suit to match his dazzling girlfriend.
MJ took to Instagram explaining the story behind the amazing creation. The post has been liked more than 47 000 times, and gained the couple plenty of praise.
'I wouldn’t even look at the dress on the left because it would be too short for me, but the way you designed the dress on the right, I would buy it in a heartbeat,' gushed one user.
Another said: 'You can wear a dress for $50 make it look like $500 dress. You have to be open minded & creative. Great job!'
