AB de Villiers will be beaming his million dollar smile even wider this morning, his Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) side might have a mountain to climb to reach the playoffs of the 2018 Indian Premier League (IPL), but based on current form they might actually win the tournament.

RCB started the week knowing they had to win all of their remaining pool games to stand a chance of making it into the playoffs. The team responded in emphatic style on Monday night with a crushing win against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP).

KXIP started off well enough with the ever popular ‘universal boss’ Chris Gayle scoring 18 runs from 14 balls. The kings were at one stage 36/1 in the fifth over, but then wickets started to tumble at regular intervals and KIXP were guilty of conceding three runouts. Their total was a miserable 88 all-out. gathered that in a format which generally favours the batsmen, last night was a night to be a bowler.

Umesh Yadav was the destroyer-in-chief with the ball and finished with figures of 3/23. He was more than ably supported by Yuzvendra Chahal and Colin de Grandhomme.

RCB made short work of chasing down the modest target, the only downside (for South African fans at least) of the amazing batting performance was that the very much in form AB de Villiers did not even need to bat.

Virat Kohli and opening partner Parthiv Patel chased down the score in just 8.1 overs. Kohli scored 48 from 28 balls and Patel chipped in with 40 from just 22 balls.

The win moves RCB to 10 log points, just two points behind three other teams vying for the remaining two playoff positions.

While AB’s men are still in deep trouble if they continue to play in the way they are currently there is no reason why they couldn’t go on to win their first IPL title.

On Saturday, de Villiers thrilled the crowds with a mesmerising innings of 72 runs off just 37 balls. His innings against the Delhi Daredevils included 6 sixes and 4 fours.

RCB fans will be hoping that de Villiers and Kohli click together in the remaining matches, if they do there is very little any bowler in the world can do to stop this dynamic duo.
