Spanish giants Barcelona FC secured a thrilling if comfortable 3-1 victory over PSL champions Mamelodi Sundowns to win the Mandela Centenary Cup at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg
Barca took an early lead in the match and never looked like giving up that lead. The Spaniards went into half time with a 2-0 lead.
Barca fielded a near to full strength team and showed the stunned crowd why they are considered a goal scoring machine by scoring the first of their three goals within two minutes.
Briefly.co.za gathered that Lionel Messi did not start the match, but the crowd went wild every time the camera showed him sitting on the Barca bench. The crowd chanted his name repeatedly throughout the match and were finally rewarded when Messi took to the field in the 73rd minute.
Sundowns can hold their heads high after a spirited performance. They created several chances and defended well at times, but were ultimately outclassed by a Barca side who had way too much firepower.
Sundowns scored a consolation goal courtesy of Vilikazi with 15-minutes of the match left to play.
