Henri van Breda has been found guilty on murder, attempted murder and defeating the ends of justice. Van Breda was found guilty of killing his mother, father and brother and attempting to kill his sister at their Stellenbosch home in January 2015.

Judge Siraj Desai handed down judgement in the Western Cape High Court earlier on Monday.

Van Breda’s mother Teresa, father Martin and brother Rudi were found hacked to death in their luxury estate home outside of Stellenbosch on 27 January 2015. His sister Marli was seriously injured during the attack.

Briefly.co.za gathered that Judge Desai said van Breda’s call to emergency services showed a lack of urgency and his demeanour in conversations with paramedics was highly unusual for a traumatised victim.

Judge Desai said he found it highly unlikely that intruders managed to gain access to the secure estate and commit the murders.

He emphasised that forensic pathologist Dr Daphne Anthony had described the types of injuries on Marli's head as being "highly similar to those sustained by the other family members" and that "it is highly unlikely the alleged attacker would have brought along an axe similar to the one in the family home".

Van Breda will be held in the hospital wing of Pollsmoor Prison until sentencing.
