Former Proteas Cricket caption, AB de Villiers has announced he would no longer play international cricket.
Taking to his official Twitter account, de Villiers made the unexpected announcement that he would retire from international cricket with immediate effect.
"I’ve made a big decision today", he captioned a video of one minute and 35 seconds.
In the video, de Villiers, who was the highest paid South African cricketer in the 2018 IPL, said it was time to make way for a new generation of athletes.
"After a 114 test matches, 228 One Day Internationals and 78 T20 internationals, it is time for others to take over.", he said.
Briefly.co.za gathered he filmed the video at the Tuks Cricket Centre in Pretoria, where he played his first game 14 seasons ago.
The announcement took South Africans off guard and soon comments came streaming in from heartbroken fans.
"You were the last hope of south Africa cricket to win the world cup. It's all vanished now.", @ArainJutley wrote.
Tweeps expressed their hope that de Villiers might be joking, and some even begged him to reconsider.
And there were those who respected his decision to retire, but added they would miss the legendary cricketer.
