In possibly one of the most horrific stories to hit the SA shores, we heard about the murder of the van Breda family. If the murders were not bad enough, we then heard how Henri van Breda, son of Martin and Teresa van Breda was a suspect in their murders and the murder of his own brother Rudi.

He was also accused of attempting to murder is sister Marli at the same time.

Earlier this week van Breda was convicted of the murders.

After a whirlwind crime and court case, there is now time to pause, and van Breda’s aunt Leenta Nel has given her thoughts on her nephew’s actions.

Nel commented that being confronted with the prospect of her nephew doing such an awful thing, was difficult to process, but that she has come to realise that the person who committed this crime was not the Henri she knew and loved.

She believes that something terrible must have happened to his brain the night of the murders for him to act in that way and she even commented that when she and her husband saw him the day after the murders, he was his normal self.

Right from the moment they found out about the murders until the verdict was delivered, her family surrounded and supported Henri. Listening to her talk, you can hear she still struggles to process his involvement in the crime.

She speaks about earlier times when the family was all together. She remembers when Henri’s gran cut herself, he couldn’t help her because the sight of blood made him queasy.

The ripple effects of this crime will be felt by the family for years to come, despite the verdict.

Henri van Breda has been found guilty of murder, attempted murder and defeating the ends of justice.

Van Breda was found guilty of killing his mother, father, and brother and attempting to kill his sister at their Stellenbosch home in January 2015. Judge Siraj Desai handed down judgment in the Western Cape High Court earlier on Monday.

Van Breda’s mother Teresa, father Martin and brother Rudi were found hacked to death in their luxury estate home outside of Stellenbosch on 27 January 2015.

His sister Marli was seriously injured during the attack. Briefly.co.za gathered that Judge Desai said van Breda’s call to emergency services showed a lack of urgency and his demeanour in conversations with paramedics was highly unusual for a traumatised victim.
