AB de Villiers shocked the cricketing world on Wednesday when he announced his immediate retirement from international cricket. AB’s decision brings to a close a glittering 14-year international career.
The former Proteas captain made the announcement via his official Twitter page on Wednesday. Since the announcement, AB de Villiers has been trending on Twitter.
Current and former teammates, players, former rivals, friends, broadcasters, cricket writers and ordinary fans have all reacted to the shock news, most of those reacting have wished AB well for his future.
Briefly.co.za gathered that respected South African cricket broadcaster Kass Naidoo was a little bit upset with the timing of AB’s decision. Naidoo said while she respected AB’s decision, the timing of his announcement could leave a bitter taste with his legion of fans.
Naidoo said if AB had made the announcement to coincide with the retirement of Morne Morkel’s retirement at the end of the Australian tour of South Africa, fans would have been given the opportunity to say farewell to AB.
She said the way AB decided to retire leaves a hollow feeling with his fans who deserve better.
AB will be remembered as one of the great players of the gentleman’s game, his exploits with the bat are legendary and nearly equalled by being one of the best fielders the game has ever known.
He will also be remembered as one of the genuinely nice guys of the sport. AB’s popularity worldwide stands testament to his likeable character.
AB said his decision was not motivated by finances: “It’s not about earning more somewhere else, it’s about running out of gas and feeling that it is the right time to move on. Everything comes to an end. To the cricket fans around South Africa and the World, thank you for your kindness and generosity, and today, for your understanding.”
AB’s sudden retirement will cause headaches for the Proteas going into the 2019 Cricket World Cup in England which starts in just over a year.
AB's teammates react to the news.
