It was a tense moment before the winner of Miss SA 2018 was announced. Tamaryn Green and Thulisa Keyi stood with bated breath and when Tamaryn's name was read the crowd at the Sun Arena Time Square went wild.

It was also a very beautiful moment:

For the past few months hundreds of young girls in the Miss SA competition have gone through extensive rounds of judgement before 23-year-old Tamaryn Green was crowned as the 60th winner of Miss SA.

Miss SA 2018 was chosen from 5 finalists - out of the top 12 - and from there 2 winners were chosen to represent South Africa as Miss World and Miss Universe.

The final question that the girls had to answer was asked before the judges chose their Miss SA.

The final question for Miss SA 2018 was:

President Cyril Ramaphosa quoted Thuma Mina, imploring all South Africans to rebuild our country. If you were to win and our president said to you: Send me, how would you lend a helping hand?

It was a simple enough question, and the ladies had very different answers:

Tamaryn Green said:

I would lend a helping by starting with what I know. I will use my medical knowledge and as an influencer I would inspire all the women of South Africa to help and heal and influence women to reach out for their strengths.

Thulisa Keyi said:

I would demand the president to focus on education because that’s the most sustainable way to grow our economy.

Of course, Tamaryn's journey is only beginning and she has a lot of work ahead of her as ambassador of South Africa.

Our lovely Miss SA is a medical student from Paarl, the Western Cape. She has won seven previous pageants including Miss Rochester and Miss New Orleans.

Tamaryn says she believes kindness, compassion, humility and staying true to yourself is what every Miss SA should possess.

For those curious about exactly what Miss SA wins - besides an enormous crown - here's a quick look at the package that Tamaryn gets:

She walks away with the crown and a R3 million prize. This package includes R1 million in cash as well as the use of a fully furnished and serviced apartment for the year of reign, a Nissan Qashqai worth R445 500 and the use of designer garments for her red carpet looks.

Tamaryn has dreamt of entering the Miss SA competition all her life. Here's what she said about her goals now that she has won:

As Miss South Africa I will be in a strong position to assist with the reconstruction of a better South Africa. I have always been passionate about making a positive and progressive difference in the lives of others.
I grew up being exposed to two very different worlds: That of the fortunate and less fortunate. I want to assist in bringing those worlds together. I believe this can be done by providing equal education to all. Actions speak louder than words! I want to be a voice to those who cannot be heard, a servant and role model to South Africans and to the people of the world at large.
Importantly, as Miss SA I want to inspire and empower women to be the best version of themselves. I want to show them that we have a voice and it can be heard, seen and valued! As a woman I believe there is a golden thread linking all women across the globe. Together we should be able to uplift, inspire, nurture and educate the youth of our world.

Our stunning runner-up was a huge crowd favourite and she took the "loss" with absolutely admirable grace.

Thulisa Keyi will go on to represent South Africa in the global beauty world along with Tamaryn. Tamaryn goes as Miss Universe SA and Thulisa as Miss World SA.

Thulisa is from Sandton, Gauteng and she is a Bcomm Accounting Graduate. The 26-year-old is quite interested in the world's cultures and can count in Japanese. She also frequently attends karate lessons. Certainly more than just a pretty face.

These two stunning young women are sure to make South Africa very proud in the future.
