- The ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) has rejected three names submitted by the North West province as possible replacements for Premier Supra Mahumapelo
- The NEC held meetings over the weekend to discuss who should replace Mahumapelo, who resigned last week
- The ANC’s top decision-making body rejected all three candidates because they are seen as allies of Mahumapelo
The African National Congress’ (ANC) National Executive Committee (NEC) has rejected all three names submitted by structures from the North West province to replace Supra Mahumapelo as premier of the embattled province.
The NEC was expected to announce a replacement for Mahumapelo, who resigned last week after weeks of violent protests, over the weekend.
The ANC’s top decision-making body was locked in discussions over the weekend aimed at finding a suitable replacement for Mahumapelo.
Briefly.co.za gathered that the NEC rejected all three candidates because they were seen as Mahumapelo’s allies.
EWN.co.za reported that Mahumapelo himself supported former education MEC Reverend OJ Tselapedi as his replacement.
Current provincial chairperson and provincial Speaker Susan Dantjie is understood to have been nominated by the provincial structure of the North West Province, while the third name was that of agriculture MEC Manketso Thlape.
Thlape is a known ally of Mahumapelo and faces widespread accusations of allowing corrupt activity to take place in the province.
The NEC said it would consult further before appointing a premier.
Reports indicate that the North West provincial executive committee (PEC) requested that President Cyril Ramaphosa appoint someone from within the ranks of the PEC to the position of Premier.
The PEC did not nominate Mahumapelo’s deputy Sello Lehari, who under normal circumstances should have been appointed as the new premier.
It is understood that Mahumapelo saw Lehari as a threat and as a result, Lehari has lost favour with those aligned to Mahumapelo.
