Bafana Bafana head coach Stuart Baxter has called on his COSAFA squad of players to turn in performances which will cause him selection headaches. Baxter wants his young-guns to raise their hands and impress him during the COSAFA Cup.

As added motivation, Baxter has promised all those players who impress him during the tournament a place in the Bafana squad that will take on Libya in the 2019 African Cup of Nations qualifier in September.

Baxter has selected a relatively young and inexperienced side to play in the COSAFA Cup which started in Polokwane on Sunday. Bafana will face the winners of Group A on Saturday.

Briefly.co.za gathered that Baxter wants another batch of players to impress him like a couple did during the Four Nation’s tournament in Zambia.

“It was the same in Zambia. Some of the players that we took there did exactly that; they put their hands up and said 'hey, don’t throw me back in the pool',” Baxter said.

He said the COSAFA Cup should be exactly the same for the players and he urged players to perform at their best.

Kick-Off.co.za reported that Baxter noted that this would be the last chance for the squad to play before the Libya match as there were no friendly’s scheduled between the tournament and the AFCON qualifier.

Baxter added that he hoped players would perform well during the COSAFA Cup in order to enhance the AFCON squad.

He said: “I think that it’s an interesting squad, if we get some work done we will do well. We’ll probably play Zambia or Zimbabwe. These teams have strong squads. If we can match them with the squad that we have, that augurs well for South Africa.”
