A gold rush has hit the small village of KwaMachi in Harding, southern KwaZulu-Natal, following the alleged discovery of gold in the area.

Villagers have been digging for the "gold" over the past several days using shovels, pickaxes, and axes, learned.

According to News24, at least 5,000 people have flocked to the village since the weekend after news of the "discovery" spread quickly.

The Mayor of Umuziwabantu, Dixie Nciki, said construction workers were digging for quarry stones last week when they made the alleged discovery. She explained:

But construction workers did not get the usual black quarry that they are used to. Instead, they discovered a material that looked like gold. They then reported the matter to the area's inkosi (Mthetho) Machi.

The Ingonyama Trust Board subsequently directed that the site be cordoned off.

Nciki added that villagers are already trading the "gold" and people are buying them. However, it has not yet been confirmed whether it's real gold or not.

Samples have reportedly been sent to Pretoria for tests. The local community, authorities, and stakeholders held a meeting on Monday to discuss the situation.

Top among their concerns is security. Two people were reportedly injured when a rock fell on them as they prospected for the precious metal.

Mthetho Machi, a traditional leader in the area, said police have beefed up security in the village. They are also managing the traffic as thousands drive there to buy the "gold."

It's still unclear what amounts the villagers are charging.
