One of the alleged killers of nine-year-old Sadia Sukhraj, Sibonelo Mkhize, appeared before the Durban Magistrate on Wednesday and blatantly refused to stay in police custody for another night. He has claimed he does not want to sleep on the floor for another night.
Mkhize added that Westville prison has beds and so he would rather be sent directly to the prison. He further stated that he had been beaten up by police officers trying to get a statement out of him at the station.
State prosecutor Surekha Marimuthu had been requesting that Mkhize be remanded to the custody of the Durban Central Police Station until such time as they could verify his home address. Marimuthu commented that it would be easier for the police to take Mkhize straight from the police station to verify his address, than what it would be to have to go and collect him and then take him from the prison.
Mkhize would not hear any of it and stated that he was not prepared to spend another night sleeping on the floor because there were not enough beds at the police station.
When speaking about the bruises, the state prosecutor commented that these had not been from the police station but rather from the arrest on Monday.
Mkhize has been charged with theft, Marimuthu stated that this would be changed at a later stage.
In another article called Residents protest for justice after 9-year-old girl is murdered during hijacking, Briefly.co.za reported that local Chatsworth residents want justice for the death of Sadia Sukhraj. Residents gathered outside the Chatsworth police station on Monday evening to demand action from the police.
The situation quickly got out of control as protesters threw rocks at the police. The police eventually responded by shooting the crowd with rubber bullets‚ teargas and stun grenades.
