The alleged turf-war between the Howick and Pietermaritzburg taxi associations has claimed at least one life as the shoot-out between the two taxi associations caused fear and havoc in Pietermaritzburg.
The shoot-out is believed to be because of a dispute over taxi routes.
According to reports by publiceyemaritzburg the Brookside Taxi Rank near the N3 was a scene of chaos and gunshots earlier Friday morning.
One person was shot to death and four others injured as this "Wild West duel" carried on. The roads near the scene was blocked off by taxis - possibly a good thing for innocent bystanders.
The footage share on the internet shows the scene after the shooting took place.
Witnesses state that the taxi drivers were running around like gangsters in a movie with rifles and shooting at each other like crazy.
Briefly.co.za gathered that journalists on the scene were threatened by taxi drivers that they will have their cameras taken away or be shot at if they did not leave.

Captain Nqobile Gwala couldn't give a detailed report on the matter yet but has confirmed that there were officers at the scene.
While things have calmed down, people are advised to avoid the area for the time being.
